Following the French Revolution, in 1796, the estate and lands were acquired by Pierre Lafaurie, who added his name to the existing one of Peyraguey. Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey was born.
The Estate has changed hands a few times over the years, but the quality of the vineyards and the winemaking have ensured Lafaurie-Peyraguey has remained one of the most impressive houses in Sauternes.
In the 1855 Classification, this consistent quality lead Lafaurie-Peyraguey to be awarded the Premier Cru Grande Classe status, alongside their neighbour, Chateau Yquem, and esteemed producer Chateau La Tour Blanche.
In 2014 the estate was purchased by Silvio Denz, the entrepreneur behind several other Bordeaux Chateaux, as well as current chairman of Lalique Crystal. Silvio undertook a complete renovation of the cellars and winemaking facilities, updating and modernising much of the old equipment, as well as reducing yields and cropping levels in the vineyards, with a view to increase quality.
Despite its overwhelming pedigree and history, it's hard not to think that the best years for Chateau Lafaurie-Peyraguey are yet to come.
