Located just two kilometres from the Garonne River in the esteemed Médoc region of France, Château La Lagune stands tall and proud, a symbol of centuries of history and winemaking excellence. This remarkable estate, boasting an elevated chartreuse and sprawling eighty hectares of land, has been producing world-class wines since the late Middle Ages.
It all began when a man named Mr Eyral purchased the humble "Village de La Lagune" and transformed it into a thriving wine-producing estate. In the 17th century, Jean Lavaud, a prominent figure in the region, further expanded the estate through strategic acquisitions. It was under the Lavaud family's ownership that the magnificent chartreuse, as we know it today, was built by renowned architects Portier and Voisin.
With its exceptional terroir, Château La Lagune was awarded the prestigious title of 3e grand cru in the historic 1855 classification. In the late 19th century, the estate was acquired by Bordeaux wine merchant Louis Seze and his daughter Marguerite, who went on to produce internationally renowned wines.
Despite the challenges of the early 20th century, which saw wars and devastation, Château La Lagune was lovingly restored by owner Georges Brunet and Marguerite, who entrusted him with the keys to the estate. In 1961, the estate changed hands once again, this time to René Chayoux, owner of Ayala Champagne House, before being bequeathed to Mr Ducellier.
In the early 2000s, Château La Lagune was given new life by the Frey Family, who became the proud owners of this historic estate. Under their guidance, massive renovations were undertaken in the vineyards and the technical facilities were modernized. The chartreuse was once again restored to its former glory, and since 2004, the talented oenologist and winemaker Caroline Frey has been leading the way, with the guidance of renowned winemaking expert Denis Dubourdieu.
Today, Château La Lagune continues to produce exceptional wines, a testament to its rich history and unwavering commitment to quality. With its unique location, exquisite chartreuse, and award-winning wines, Château La Lagune remains a must-visit destination for wine lovers from around the world.
