Located in the picturesque commune of Pomerol, on the right bank of the Garonne river, lies the renowned Chateau La Fleur de Gay. This historic estate is situated in the largest surface of the eponymous appellation, which also includes plots in the neighboring commune of Libourne. Surrounded by the Barbanne stream in the north, Pomerol is a commune steeped in ancient and medieval history.
Dating back to Roman times, Pomerol was a well-known axis for the rich Romans who would travel from the port of Libourne/Condat to the vineyards and cropping in the area. In the 12th century, the Hospitallers of Saint John of Jerusalem established a military base in Pomerol, along with a hospital for pilgrims following the Way of St James from Paris to Santiago de Compostella. The remains of this historic past can still be seen today, with family crest stone pillars and the iconic La Croix de Gay, a cross of intersection believed to be related to the pilgrimage. The old Romanesque church, dating back to the 11th century, was unfortunately destroyed in the 19th century but the cellar of Chateau La Fleur de Gay stands as a tribute, built with stones retrieved from the church.
In the late 18th century, Pomerol and neighboring Saint-Emilion saw a rise in quality wine production. The construction of bridges over the Garonne and the growing trade from Corrèze enabled the wines from the right bank to compete with the more established Bordeaux vineyards.
Today, Chateau La Fleur de Gay remains a stronghold of quality and tradition, with grape growers fiercely protecting their terroir and preserving the rural landscape. The hamlet of Pignon, located in the northern part of the appellation, is said to be the historic village of Pomerol and the birthplace of the Lebreton family, owners of the chateau. The former rectory in the heart of the hamlet is a reminder of the brave Abbot Trémolière, who sheltered the proscribed Girondins Barbaroux, Louvet, and Valady in 1793.
With its ancient and medieval roots, picturesque landscape, and dedication to producing exceptional wines, Chateau La Fleur de Gay truly embodies the spirit and essence of the Pomerol appellation. Visit this historic estate and experience the unique blend of tradition and innovation in every bottle.
