Nestled in the heart of the picturesque Pomerol region in France, lies a producer that is highly esteemed yet rarely seen – Chateau Lafleur. Alongside its illustrious neighbor, Chateau Petrus, this extraordinary estate reigns supreme at the top of the Pomerol hierarchy, at least in my opinion.
At a mere 4.5 hectares in size, Chateau Lafleur may seem small in comparison to other chateaux in the region, but its size is not an indication of its quality. In fact, it is this limited production that adds to the allure and exclusivity of their wines. The vineyard is divided into four distinct sections, each with its own unique soil composition of gravel, clay, and sand, which impart different characteristics to the wine.
One particular section, measuring 0.7 hectares and located near esteemed neighbors Chateau Petrus and Gazin, is exclusively reserved for the production of their highly acclaimed second wine, La Pensees de Lafleur. This further emphasizes the meticulous attention to detail and commitment to quality that the Guinaudeau family, headed by Jacques and Sylvie, pour into their craft.
The vineyards are evenly planted with a 50/50 ratio of Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which thrive in the ideal terroir of Pomerol. Since taking over the estate in 2001, the Guinaudeau family has continued to uphold the legacy of Chateau Lafleur, ensuring that their wines are a true reflection of the unique terroir and the family's unwavering dedication.
To maintain the purity and distinctiveness of their wines, the vinification process at Chateau Lafleur is kept simple. The grapes are carefully handpicked and undergo a total maceration period of three weeks in their seven small concrete vats. The wine then completes its malolactic fermentation in oak barrels, adding a subtle complexity and depth to the final product.
Chateau Lafleur is not just a producer; it is a legacy, a story of passion, and a commitment to producing exceptional wines that embody the essence of Pomerol. With every sip, one can taste the centuries of tradition, the expertise of the Guinaudeau family, and the unique terroir that makes Chateau Lafleur a true masterpiece of the Pomerol region.
