Shanteh Wale - Halliday Wine Companion
Fermented in a single 2500L French oak barrel. There is a singular personality here worth your while. Mandarin skin, mock orange blooms and yellow doughnut peach. There is a briny wash of salinity that threads through the very fine acidity and some white tea tannins right on the end. Once again oak hums along in the background, providing a melodic tune. Sandstone, brown baking paper warm from the oven and oat milk creaminess. This is a sleeper wine that will age glacially and maintain its charisma and energy for over a decade to come. A star is born.

Kasia Sobiesiak - The Wine Front
Jeff Byrne’s ‘regular’ Chardonnay 2024 scored a no-blinking 95 points from me on the blind bench during judging at the Orange Wine Show this year (it’s $35, a note will follow soon). Its previous vintage also got 95 points from me a year ago, when I visited the region. This says a lot, mainly that the wine is delicious and bloody great value. The wine in review, however, is Jeff’s first single barrel release. It’s the best fruit selection, fermented and raised in a 2,500L French foudre. This wine is delicious already, but it will be even better in a few years. Out of curiosity, I checked the last time an Orange Chardonnay scored 96 points on TWF, and I found only one, and it was Rowlee Single Vineyard Chardonnay 2016, tasted in 2017 by Campbell. Interesting. If you ask me, there are some exciting Chardonnays coming from Orange these days.
The execution is perfect. Seduction comes here in many forms. At first, shimmers of struck match, quickly moving into flint and peach blossom, grapefruit skin and just a hint of brine. This wine is very expressive even when cold but deserves a large bowl to handle its perfume and allow it to change with time. Perfectly ripe fruit forms the core of this wine, with apple, peach, melon and pomelo. All wrapped in delicious oak spice; there’s nougat, milk powder, and custard tart, with notes of cinnamon—none of which is overwhelming the fruit—all flows in balance. Long, satin-textured ribbons of cool acidity hold these layers in tension. It’s a full package, this wine. Full of flavour, full of grace and big on hedonistic satisfaction.

Angus Hughson - Vinous
The Byrne Farm 2024 Chardonnay Single Vineyard is benchmark Chardonnay from Orange with its natural fruit energy reined in by an impressive use of oak. It opens with precise fruit aromas of nectarine, apricot and pink grapefruit, all beautifully integrated with fine French oak and lifted by well-managed gunflint reduction. This is a finer style but boasts killer purity and fine detail through the long, laser-like finish. One of the best yet from the region.
