Generous and expressive, the wine shows black and purple fruit richness, warm spice, and assorted nut characters on the nose with a hint of dark cocoa. It's succulent and weighty in the mouth with supple texture and fine-grained tannins, finishing velvety and delectable.

New oak is low here, around 5% (French and American), but there’s likely some more recent fills, with some walnut/hazelnut husk and vanillin notes and structuring, woody grip. This is always the generous but not too overt Maxwell shiraz, offering dark fruit, some rum and raisin spice notes, hints of dark chocolate and anise. So too, here. There’s also a little ferrous minerality, adding savoury detail.

This somehow manages to feel old school and new school at once. It’s in a good place as a result. It show characters of toast, peppercorn, resin and cream, but then it’s also fresh – and energetic – with raspberry, plum and floral fruit flavour. It’s warm, fresh, lively and textural at once. It goes all right, and is very good value.
