Made from solera material dating back around 120 years, this wine offers layer upon layer of chocolate, toasted almonds, fig, dried orange and other citrus fruit. The acidity rushes in to cut through the sweet richness. Silky and concentrated with exceptional length and a seemingly endless life span, this is crying out for a dried fruit or toasted nut dessert.

Picked late and muted with spirit early, this maker is among the top three leading lights in Rutherglen and with that, among the greatest producers of complex, unforgettable fortified wines in the world. Riveting aromas of mulled date, molasses, clove, star anise and hoisin, placated with the warming hearth of roasted chestnuts and a suggestion, rather than a tilt, of rancio blue cheese. Brilliant gear, ready to drink into eternity. It will never die.

Deep mahogany. Dried fig and black tea on the nose, then concentrated mocha and molasses flavors, enlivened by candied orange zest. Full, rich and sweet, but surprisingly drinkable, with terrific intensity and length.

This is a beautiful fortified, composed of solera wines going back a staggering 120 years. Espresso colored, it exudes dried fig, praline, butterscotch, smoke and mocha aromas. The palate is intensely sweet, with a lick of alcohol heat, but with beautiful freshness to buoy the dried orange, fig and toffee flavors, which linger long on the endless finish. Savor with a caramel-and fruit-based dessert.

Always had a yen for Chambers, the producer of this style that I have bought the most, followed the most, I guess one could say. Price is for 375ml.
Opens with this kind of rosy, floral salvo, pretty even, yes, dark chocolate, espresso, caramel, toffee and fig/date dried fruits too. So very complex. Flavours roll with power and grip, similar to bouquet but spicy, maybe more coffee characters too. Lush, hedonistic, charismatic and balanced in its voluminous way, and, yet, a fresh, burned orange finish. Memorable stuff.

The Grand level of Chambers' offerings may be the best compromise between expense, rarity and quality. This Grand Muscat boasts knockout scents of dried flowers, tea leaves and rancio, while the flavors are date-like in sweet intensity but accompanied by floral qualities and impeccable freshness.

Comprising a solera dating back to the 1930s and an average wine age over 25 years, the NV Grand Muscat Rutherglen (2024 release) is showing decades of fastidious care by the Chambers family. This robust wine marries hearty aromas of dried fruits, chocolate, burnt orange and dusty/earthy tones with both youthful and aged components. This is beautifully textured and fresh, with weighty flavors that extend over an exceptional finish.

(for 375 ml.) Deep brown color. Assertive scents of sultana raisin, fig paste, toffeed apple and bitter orange. Then remarkably lively on the palate, displaying flavors of cane molasses, pecan pie and caramel. Has great energy and nerve for such sweetness and depth. The spicy, intense, very long finish features a note of candied nuts.
