There's convincing weight to the 2022 Pinot Gris Sleepers Vineyard from the Kēkerengū Coast. This is a dry, full-bodied, savory New Zealand interpretation of Pinot Gris. Yes, it has pure pear and apple fruit notes plus a fragrant florality, but they've also managed to capture savory, pastry hints and a spiced character that sparks memories of dining out in Alsace. Pinot Gris is normally treated with a lack of respect in New Zealand, so I'm delighted to see a wine given its due. It is drinking well now.

Some grapefruit and mineral aromas and flavors. Some flint, too. It’s medium-bodied with fresh fruit and a delicious finish.

The 2022 Pinot Gris Sleepers Vineyard is a fully dry style, which is rather unexpected considering that it is perfumed and round, with sweetly fruited aromas and flavors. This cool, exposed and remote part of the Marlborough wine region generally leads to small crops and intense concentration, which does show in this wine. However, the combination of the citric acidity and the low residual sugar leads to a dry and somewhat austere ending, which isn't particularly pleasurable.
