This turned out to be a pretty good vintage for red wine. It was short and quick and with Covid everyone got stuck in. This is cabernet dominant but with important contributions from equal parts merlot and cabernet franc, which play out on the nose. Highly perfumed with floral violet notes. The palate is beautifully weighted with a fine chalky tannin and fine oak influence. Poised and balanced. Terrific wine.

There seems to be a lightness of touch to the 2020 Pierro offerings. This is quiet and quite ethereal, laced with red currants and blueberries, cedary oak and spices, dark chocolate and forest floor aromas. A touch shy of medium bodied, the tannins are supple, there’s chalky acidity throughout and a lot to like.

Quite the contrast in texture and structure, after tasting the 2020 Parker Estate First Growth Cabernet. This is smooth and plush, like falling back into a purple velvet lounge. I’m so comfortable, I’m at ease. Here we have black and red fruit, bay leaf, mint, tobacco and baking spice. It’s a little dusty and sweetly spiced via fine quality gingery oak, but so succulent and easy, lovely mouth-perfume, chocolate and gravel tannin, with a bright finish of excellent length.

While many producers take the approach of "more, more, more" for their reserve wines, Pierro seems to, if anything, pare back the perceived inputs into this wine, which allows the fruit to sing. This 2020 Cabernet Sauvignon Merlot Reserve has gorgeous clarity and repose; the red fruit sits in harmony and comfort with the tannins, which are very finely milled and powdery in the mouth. It's an elegant wine that has a little minty flick through the finish. There are also notes of graphite, green tea, pomegranate, raspberry pip, saltbush and tapenade. 14% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.
