Dense dark red to black colour of great intensity.
Ripe berry aromas of great intensity with underlying dusty and earthy characters. There is depth to the nose indicating there are reserves of complex aromas yet to develop. The palate is substantial with intense and fully ripe, fleshy sweet fruit filling the mid palate with great palate extension driven by the ripe and mature tannin. The mouthfeel is robust but the tannins are smooth.

Block 2 was planted in 1973. Glorious colour, elegance and finesse to burn. Open fermented, 10-day post ferment maceration, 18 months in French barriques (40 per cent new). A beautifully crafted wine, capturing all that the great fruit had to offer. Treads oh-so-lightly, but with infinite power.

This outstanding cabernet comes from some of the oldest vines in the region. It’s generous and full bodied with a controlled elegance and style. Leafy blackcurrant and fine dusty graphite and slightly iron filings characters release from the intense and driven palate. Tight and powerfully structured with the potential for extended ageing.

Houghton clone cabernet sauvignon from the dry-grown Block 2. Matured for 18 months in French oak (40% new). 2019 was cool in Margaret River, and the wines are aromatic, nuanced and accessible right now. This is silky and fine, the fruit prioritised at every stage in the mouth. The tannins have been obliterated into the fruit; smashed to smithereens so fine as to be at one with the berries. Lovely, sumptuous, sleek cabernet.
Winemakers Notes
BLOCK 2 on the Hay Shed Hill vineyard was planted in 1975 to the Houghton clone of Cabernet Sauvignon. These old dry grown vines have sunk deep roots into the gravelly loam soil profile providing the nutrient basis they need. Block 2 has a steep northern facing aspect maximizing the sunlight interception by the vines providing ideal ripening conditions.
