Emma Jenkins MW - Decanter
Biodynamic Central Otago producer Quartz Reef has a stellar reputation for sparkling (and still) wines. Delicate and precise, its flagship Vintage displays beautifully integrated aromas of freshly baked bread, subtle lemon, green apple and aspirin-like minerality. The palate has similar finesse and plenty of harmony, it’s a lovely melding of concentrated fruit and complex autolytic elements. Very textural with a rich mid palate, the distinctive minerally line of acidity lends a crisp and very long citrussy finish. Impressive and delicious.

Rebecca Gibb MW - Vinous
The 2017 Blanc de Blancs is a real labor of love: the grapes are grown along organic and biodynamic lines before being turned into sparkling wine and aged on lees for a whopping 5 years. The result is both inviting and characterful. Rich and concentrated flavors evoke ground almonds, pastry and cooked apple, as if it were a tarte tatin. The lengthy maturation yielded a fine, tingly bead of bubbles that integrates and allows the intensity of the base wine to shine. This wine is now in its prime and shows what New Zealand is capable of when it turns its attention to sparkling wine.

This spends 60 months on lees.
While drinking superbly now, this needs time in cellar. For sure. It’s a green apple, not quite there at ripeness, a crunch of that, resonating, scintillating, tart and supremely long and fine. A lick of nuttiness, a bit of fino sherry, but geez, this is tightly wound and energetic and bright. Fine detail galore, one for the ages. Salon 1996? Yeah, if you know you know.

Erin Larkin - Robert Parker Wine Advocate
The 2017 Methode Traditionelle Blanc de Blancs is layered and textural, and after five years on lees, this is absolutely expected. The wine flows and undulates across the palate and speaks of lemon pith, juniper, white peach, green apple, preserved citrus and brine. The mousse in the mouth is plump and pillowy, with generally very fine beading. It is concentrated and flavorsome, and it penetrates the palate long after the wine has gone. Light on its feet though, make no mistake, there is plenty of time to go before it sleeps. 12% alcohol, sealed under Diam.

Hazelnuts, pie crust, apricots, white pears, white grapefruit and spiced apples on the nose. Bright and crisp with a silky mousse and creamy, dry layers. Transparent and driven. From organically and biodynamically grown grapes.
