This golden-colored Tokaji has aromas of raw honey, apricot blossom, pear and baked apple tart. Silky smooth upon entry, it offers flavors of baked apples, wildflower honey, canned pears and apricot. The acidity is nicely balanced so as not to be too cloyingly sweet.

This has a dark, almost amber color, offering notes of dried peaches and persimmons with hints of raw mushrooms and honey. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, with tense, vivid acidity and a sweet, caramelized character. Creamy finish with hints of white tea and spices.

Perfumed and complex nose of dried apricot, white nectarine, white truffle, bergamot, white pepper and jasmine. Dense and sweet, yet balanced. Focused and layered. Spicy character on the finish.

2016 was a wet year in Tokaji with heavy rain in summer. The humidity led to the early onset of botrytis. The 5 Puttonyos Aszú has a refreshing nose of apricot, acacia honey and white pepper. More dried fruits and spices on the luscious palate, with sugar level at 158 g/l. The racy acidity (10.2g/l) follows all the way through to the finish. The base wine is a 50/50 blend of Furmint and Hárslevelű. Aged for two years in used oak barrels of 225 litres.

The 2016 Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos has a waxier, more resinous nose compared to the 2013 5 Puttonyos that I tasted alongside, and does not quite deliver the same precision. There is a light adhesive scent that loiters in the background. The palate is better, offering tangy marmalade, bitter orange and peach on the entry. This is an assertive and striking Tokaji, although the bitterness on the aftertaste means that it will show much better partnered with, say, a 36-month-old Comté.

The 2016 Tokaji Aszú 6 Puttonyos has retained the somewhat adhesive bouquet that slightly obscures the fruit. It makes this Tokaji seem a little "distant". The palate is well-balanced and pretty, with marmalade and apricot notes. It's not dense, though it displays fine tension on the finish. Fine.
