The first vintage from this Monforte property was 2014, and it ages its Barolo in Austrian casks. This has a sweet, juicy cherry nose that's fleshy and upfront. It's rich in the mouth, with suave tannins and ample vigour, a fine example of a forward Barolo that's hugely enjoyable even if it does lack depth and complexity. It's ideal for those who lack patience and want to get drinking the vintage soon - the 2014 was similar, suggesting this is a stylistic choice.

Monforte d’Alba. Bottled in June 2018. Concentrated ruby with orange tinges. Quite reductive and needs lots of aeration to open up. Great interplay between acidity, crunchy tannins and cherry fruit on the palate, but trails off a little on the finish. Score: 16/20
