Floral and fresh with lots of roses and spices with hints of ripe fruit. Love the nose! Full and chewy with polished tannins and a balanced finish. Caressing and beautiful on the palate. Better in 2015.

Good deep red. Pure, subdued aromas of medicinal dark cherry, licorice and menthol; smells distinctly cool. Then densely packed and imploded on the palate, with terrific fruit intensity accentuated by spice and stone notes. Sexy violet and lilac notes contribute to the impression of juiciness. Youthfully bound-up but every bit as vigorous as the 2007. Finishes very long and firm, with dusty tannins.

Verduno gives tough-as-nails Barolo; Monvigliero is the one true grand cru. Stylish and pure, almost opulent. Great length.

The 2008 Barolo Monvigliero flows from the glass with layers of silky, textured fruit. This is one of the more feminine wines in the Scavino lineup. Floral, minty notes develop in the glass, adding complexity, nuance and personality. The expression fruit is very Scavino, while the aromatics and structure are pure Monvigliero. This is another intriguing Barolo from Scavino.

There is always something new happening at Scavino, where Enrico Scavino, along with his daughters Enrica and Elisa, continues to push the envelope. This year the Scavinos have a new Riserva they are issuing to mark the 30th Anniversary of Bric del Fiasc, first released in 1978. The 2009s, 2010s and 2011s I tasted point to an estate working at a very high level of overall quality and consistency. Readers who want to learn more about the estate may want to take a look at my video interview with Elisa Scavino.

Beautiful cherry and strawberry fruit is delineated on a well-integrated frame in this delicate red. Tea and iron notes add complexity, with the fine tannins woven into the finish.

An iconic wine, this shows bold spice and smoke flavors that are brushed over a core of dark, luscious fruit. It's already soft and plush with a touch of sweet, sun-ripened cherry on the finish.
