Tengumai

Founded in 1823 during the late Edo period, Tengumai is a renowned Sake producer hailing from the beautiful pastoral area of Ishikawa in central Japan. Surrounded by dense forests, the brewery was believed to have an otherworldly presence, with the Tengu, a long-nosed goblin from Japanese tradition, rumored to reside in the area. The Shata family, now in its 8th generation, continues to produce Sake using traditional methods passed down through their ancestors. Located in Ishikawa prefecture, the brewery benefits from the pure local water sourced from the surrounding mountains and faces the majestic Sea of Japan. The name Tengumai is derived from the belief that even the Tengu themselves would be compelled to dance after tasting the exceptional Sake produced by the Shata family. Known for its complex flavours, Tengumai produces a range of premium Sakes, including their highly respected Yamahai Sake, which pairs perfectly with a variety of foods and boasts a distinctive flavour, texture, and taste. Just a short 30-minute drive from the brewery lies the city of Kanazawa, famous for its high level of art, food, culture, and stunning Japanese gardens. Often referred to as a smaller version of Kyoto, this city adds to the allure of Tengumai, making it a must-visit for Sake enthusiasts and culture seekers alike. So why not take a sip of Tengumai and experience the enchanting flavours of Japan's past and present.
