Schloss Lieser

Located in the picturesque Middle Mosel region, Schloss Lieser stands as a magnificent symbol of German viticulture. This stunning Neo-Renaissance castle was built in 1875 for Eduard Puricelli, a prominent figure in the petroleum industry. However, it was the marriage of Puricelli's daughter to Clemens Freiherr von Schorlemer-Lieser, a German politician and Prussian Minister of Agriculture, that truly gave this castle its status as a political center. Over the years, Schloss Lieser has undergone several changes in ownership, but it has always maintained its rich history and opulent charm. In 1904, it became the principal cellar and press house for Freiherr von Schorlemer's prestigious vineyards, spanning over 100 acres in the Mosel and Saar regions. However, in the 1970s, the estate faced a decline until it was revived by Thomas Haag and his wife Ute in 1992. With their expertise in winemaking, the Haag family has transformed Schloss Lieser into a renowned producer of Mosel Rieslings. Today, Schloss Lieser boasts an impressive portfolio of eight Grosse Lagen (Grand Crus) spanning 25 hectares, with vineyards in renowned sites such as Graacher Himmelreich, Wehlener Sonnenuhr, and Bernkastler Doktor. With a production of 8,000 cases annually, the Haag family is dedicated to crafting exceptional Rieslings that showcase the unique terroir of the Mosel. Their winemaking philosophy is centered around minimal intervention, with a focus on handpicking the grapes and allowing for spontaneous fermentation. The Haag family's dedication to quality is evident in their continuous investments in the estate, expanding their vineyard holdings and constantly striving to improve their production techniques. At the helm of the estate are Thomas and Ute's children, Lara and Niklas, who represent the next generation of Schloss Lieser. Both have studied at Geisenheim University, the top wine-making school in Germany, and are committed to continuing their family's legacy of producing exceptional Mosel Rieslings. With a combination of traditional and modern techniques, Schloss Lieser's wines are a true reflection of the Mosel region's terroir. The wines are made with native yeasts and are fermented in stainless steel tanks to preserve their delicate aromas and flavors. The family also employs a slow and gentle pressing method, allowing for extended lees contact to enhance the wines' structure and complexity. Schloss Lieser's commitment to quality and their exceptional portfolio of Grand Cru vineyards has earned them a top rating in Germany's wine guides. They are one of only two estates in the Greater Mosel to receive a five-star rating, alongside the esteemed Egon Müller. At Schloss Lieser, winemaking is a labor of love, and their dedication to producing exceptional Mosel Rieslings is evident in each bottle. With a perfect blend of tradition, innovation, and passion, Schloss Lieser continues to be a shining example of premium German winemaking.
