Real Agrado is not your average wine producer. Founded in 1974 by agricultural engineer Juan Manuel Domínguez, the project has evolved under the leadership of Julian Ayuga since 2006. With a wealth of experience as a consultant, winemaker, and member of the DOC Rioja Appellation tasting committee, Julian is highly respected in the industry and has mentored many young and aspiring winemakers in Rioja.
At 72 years old, Julian proudly proclaims that nobody alive has opened more bottles of Rioja than him. But age is just a number for this passionate winemaker, who continues to push the boundaries and challenge himself to create exceptional wines.
Real Agrado, which translates to "true pleasure", is a fitting name for this project. It reflects the use of estate-owned grapes only and the commitment to showcase the unique terroir of Rioja in every bottle.
The vineyards of Real Agrado are located in the picturesque towns of Aldeanuevo and Alfaro, where the Mediterranean influence is evident in the wines. These lands are nestled in the foothills of the stunning Monte Yerga and are divided into four vineyard areas.
Canterabuey, certified as a Viñedo Singular, is a special vineyard with old bush vines of low-yielding Garnacha planted in 1975. La Lobera, with 34 hectares planted in 1992-93, boasts poor, stony soils and a variety of grapes including Viura, Tempranillo, Garnacha, Mazuelo, and Graciano. Las Planas, the highest altitude vineyard, is planted with bush vine Viura and exposed to cold winds in cold soils. Rodiles, planted in 1999, has a scarce variety in Rioja, Graciano, which has adapted exceptionally well to the alluvial clay soils of the estate.
Real Agrado Tinto, their signature wine, is a blend of 80% Garnacha and 20% Tempranillo from La Lobera and Canterabuey. The grapes are fermented separately in stainless steel, with the Garnacha undergoing destemming and the Tempranillo using carbonic maceration. This unique process results in a wine that truly reflects the south-to-north Riojan dialectic, with the Garnacha leading the way and handing over to Tempranillo for a smooth finish. It's a clever and simple wine, with a perfect balance of flavors and aromas.
In the glass, the Real Agrado Tinto is a vibrant purple-red, with a light and spicy nose of Garnacha and a touch of floral and herbal notes. On the palate, it's fresh and delicate, with raspberry and red cherry flavors transitioning to bramble, boysenberry, violet, and a hint of cola. The texture is just below medium weight, with a good feel and a long finish. It's a wine that defies expectations and showcases the true potential of Rioja.
Real Agrado is more than just a winery; it's a labor of love for winemaker Chema Pangua and the team behind it. With a commitment to quality and a passion for showcasing the unique terroir of Rioja, Real Agrado is a name to watch in the world of Spanish wine. So, the next time you reach for a bottle of Rioja, make it Real Agrado and experience the true pleasure of Spanish wine.
