John and Deirdre Colvin bought 150 acres of vacant land at Mitchells Road, Mount View in the Hunter Valley in January 1998. Having looked at dozens of properties over the previous decade, none had appealed until they saw Montvalley. The name Montvalley is a derived name, and reflects the fact that the vineyard is nestled in a beautiful valley in the midst of the Brokenback Ranges.
