Don Guido, a wine that bears the name of a true pioneer in the world of sherry production, is the shining star of Bodegas Williams & Humbert. With a rich history that spans over 130 years, this Spanish winery has played a significant role in the creation of the Jerezs-Brandy Quality Demarcation and has cemented its place as one of the most prestigious wine producers in the world. It is no surprise then, that their soleras, which house the original wines and brandies in high quality oak casks, are the foundation of every sherry and brandy crafted at Bodegas Williams & Humbert.
But this winery doesn't stop at just producing exceptional sherry and brandy. In fact, they have taken advantage of their aromatic casks to carefully age traditional rums in a manner similar to the production of great Single Malts. And their efforts have not gone unnoticed. Don Guido, a 20 year-old Pedro Ximénez (VOS), was recently crowned Wine of the Year at the prestigious International Wine & Spirits Competition "Sommelier Challenge 2019".
This sweet sherry, made from grapes from the Pago de Balbaína vineyard in Jerez Superior, undergoes a unique process of sun-drying the grapes for 15 days before pressing and fortifying. It then ages in the Criaderas and Solera system for a minimum of 20 years, resulting in a dark ebony colored sherry with intense aromas of raisins, figs, and balsamic notes. On the palate, Don Guido is slightly acidic, incredibly sweet, and leaves a long-lasting, delightful bouquet. It pairs perfectly with desserts and cheese.
But Don Guido's influence extends beyond just sherry. It also plays a vital role in the production of Dos Maderas rum, a blend of 5 year-old rums from Guyana and Barbados that is aged in American oak casks previously used to age 20 year-old Dos Cortados. In the final stage of production, the rum is aged for an additional 2 years in casks previously used to age Don Guido, resulting in the exquisite Ron Dos Maderas 5+5 PX.
Named after Guido Williams, son of the founder of Bodegas Williams & Humbert, this sherry pays tribute to a man who made significant contributions to the Jerez region. Guido Williams was a true British gentleman, educated in England but called back to Spain to join the family business in 1911. He fought in World War I and was awarded the Military Cross of the Order of the British Empire for his bravery. After the war, he continued to work for the British Embassy while also being the Vice Consul and a key member of the family business until his death in 1959.
Don Guido, a testament to tradition, history, and excellence, continues to impress and captivate the palates of wine connoisseurs and sommeliers around the world. Visit Bodegas Williams & Humbert and experience the magic of this acclaimed sherry for yourself. Cheers to Don Guido, the beloved Pedro Ximénez that truly stands out among the best in the world.
