The founding father of Di Giorgio Family Wines, Stefano Di Giorgio, arrived in Australia from Italy, on July 9th, 1952. He was drawn to the Limestone Coast in South Australia, and contracted his services to local farmers in the area. From 1956, Stefano began to aquire holdings of his own in the area, and over the next decades, expanded the farming business to include sheep and cattle. In 1989, four hectares of land was set aside for the planting of grapes. This was gradually expanded to encompass the 126 ha of vines that the fmaily tends today, with the last plantings going in, in 1998. Initially the fruit from these vines was sold to other wineries, but the Di Giorgio family wanted to produce their own wine, and in 2002 purchased a winery in the Coonawarra district. Today, the business is still managed by Stefano's four children - Frank, Nanni, Anna and Nicky, with winemaker Peter Douglas heading up the production side of things.
