Ciabot Berton, a renowned producer from the picturesque hills of Barolo in Italy, has a history deeply rooted in the land and fueled by an unending passion for winemaking. It all began in 1876 when decorated musketeer Giovenale Viberti purchased his first vineyard in the esteemed crus of La Morra, Rive. His widow, Teresa, continued the legacy by acquiring a farmhouse in Borgata Tetti and a plot of land in Bricco San Biagio in 1885. The family business was then carried on by their children, Maddalena and Luigi.
It was in 1935 when Giovenale's son, Luigi, took over the reins of the estate. Under his leadership, the farm evolved into a specialized winery, focusing solely on producing high-quality wines. The foundations of Ciabot Berton's winemaking philosophy were laid during this time. In 1961, the first vintage of Barolo was bottled, and the family continued to expand their vineyards in the Bricco San Biagio and Roggeri crus.
The '80s saw the construction of the current cellar, strategically located to overlook the stunning Barolo hills. The name "Ciabot Berton" was inspired by a small building, or "ciabòt" in Piedmontese, which once stood on the site. The building belonged to a man named Berton, who accidentally caused a fire while trying to make fireworks. The ruins of this building can still be seen from the cellar today.
In the '90s, Marco, Luigi's son, took over the management of the estate and continued to invest in new plots of land and improve cellar processes. With a deeper understanding of the land's potential, the winery began separate vinification of their various plots, highlighting their unique qualities. Ciabot Berton also embarked on a path towards sustainability, following low environmental impact guidelines in their agriculture practices.
In 2010, Federica, Marco's wife and a qualified sommelier, joined the family business, bringing her expertise and love for wine. And in 2023, the winery will open its brand new tasting room, featuring a meticulous renovation by the Lato51 architecture studio. This space will showcase the stories of Ciabot Berton's wines, the terroir, and the values that have been passed down through generations. The bond between the Oberto family and La Morra is unbreakable, and their wines continue to reflect their unending passion for the land.
