Chateau la Clotte

Nestled in the heart of the picturesque village of Saint-Émilion, lies the renowned Château la Clotte. This historic property spans just 4 hectares and boasts a rich history dating back to the 16th century when it was owned by the esteemed de Grailly family. The name "La Clotte" itself is a nod to the property's unique geography, with its buildings built into the side of a cliff, creating a maze of hidden labyrinths. In the Gascon patois, "La Clotte" translates to "a small troglodyte habitat", further adding to the charm and intrigue of this producer. As one approaches the Château, the neo-Gothic turret and two lime trees stand tall and proud, making a striking first impression. But it is the vineyard itself that truly captures the essence of La Clotte. With its compact terraces resting on limestone plateaux and a clay-limestone slope, this very old vineyard is a patchwork of prime terroir. The fifty-year-old vines are carefully tended to, with a planting density of 6000 vines per hectare and a strategic southern exposure that shields them from the elements. Under new ownership since 2014, La Clotte has undergone significant investment in both the cellar and vineyard, resulting in wines of exceptional quality. The winemaking process is a meticulous one, with a focus on plot selection, manual harvesting, and gravity-flow grape reception. The grapes then undergo manual punching down and submerged-cap maceration in stainless-steel tanks, followed by malolactic fermentation in oak and 18 months of ageing in new barrels. The final blend is a true representation of the unique terroir of La Clotte, with a majority of Merlot (approximately 85%) and a complement of Cabernet Franc. The result is a wine that is rare and sought after, not only due to its limited production but also for its ability to combine elegant tannins with the voluptuous character that is characteristic of Saint-Émilion. But perhaps the most exceptional aspect of Château la Clotte is its wines' ageing potential. These wines are meant to be savoured and enjoyed for years to come, making them a true haute couture experience in the world of wine. With its rich history, unique terroir, and commitment to producing exceptional wines, Château la Clotte is a producer that truly stands out in the world of French winemaking.
