The Collective Review
When do you ever get to experience the world’s best of anything? It’s usually a privilege reserved for the very few, and it typically doesn’t come cheap either! Yet, this is the beauty of a TWC Mystery wine and why you should sit up and pay attention.
They announced this wine as one of the world’s best. Read that again.… ‘world’s best’. Topping over 18,250 other contenders at the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards and winning a coveted ‘best in show’ trophy has squarely put this McLaren Vale icon on the map.
Only 50 wines each year are ever assigned this rare title, and usually, within minutes, they sell out globally. Thankfully, due to our deep connections and ongoing support of this very label, we’ve managed to bag what might just be one of the best Mystery deals we’ve ever put together. It’s a ripper. 97 points. $80 RRP. Single-vineyard, Hand-crafted Vale Grenache for a fraction of the price.
The only catch is that because this brand and label are now so highly sought after, we will have to hide the name and details until it lands on your doorstep. It’s an agreement we’ve reached with the winery in question, so you are just going to have to trust us. The winemaker behind this label is one of Australia’s best and brightest, with an incredible track record for scoring big with their wines. This 2022 Grenache is no exception.
McLaren Vale Shiraz has been a regular feature of our Best in Show and Platinum selections in recent years (as it is again this year), but this distinctive GI to the south of the Adelaide Hills is also celebrated for its astonishing patrimony of old-vine Grenache. Our judges pounced on this Grenache from the excellent 2022 vintage (dryer in McLaren Vale than elsewhere). A translucent black-purple in colour, this wine has beautiful aromas of sweet, beguiling fruits (strawberry and cherry) without any sticky jamminess; instead those fruits have a fresh, almost perfumed sheen. The wine is dark, vigorous and lively, despite its relatively low acidity; deftly extracted tannins and the innate vigour and tenacity of the fruits deliver that freshness. Fine raw materials and the best of contemporary Australian winemaking come together here. Read more

This is a rich and powerful wine with one foot in the contemporary camp of detail and freshness, the other caught in an older-school brood of camphor, anise and darker fruit accents lathered with oak. A bit too much. Kirsch, pine and a sour lilt of Seville orange peel are dragged to good length by maritime freshness. A whiff of bracken, suggestive of whole bunches in the mix. The tannins, long-limbed, firm and nourishing, are excellent. Good drinking.

Tasting Notes
The plushness and generosity of the grenache fruit is brilliantly displayed across the palate, but it is also brilliantly offset by plating tannins and an in-and-out running acidity. All of these qualities crash balletically together at the end of the palate, as if a well-practised circus troupe: cherried fruits, puckering tannins, and piquant acidity. Whole bunch extended maceration, integrated and balanced with fruit. This wine is suitable for vegans
Winemakers Note
Produced from the best rows of the best vineyard within the McLaren Vale using cutting-edge but old-school viticulture and winemaking. Hand-tended vines, whole-bunch fermented, basket pressed and stored in French oak barrels from bespoke coopers.
