Points, price, pedigree - the holy trinity coming together at a price we've not seen any serious contender come within earshot of since the days when petrol cost less than a dollar a litre and when we thought $300 for a bottle of Grange was far too much.
We can't reveal the finer details here, as the true brand's identity must remain a mystery (a gentle handshake agreement with the winery prevents us from putting this historic South Australian estate's name in print). But you can imagine that this limited-release Wrattonbully Shiraz, from a momentous vintage (2021 is rated 10/10 according to Halliday’s Wine Companion) is made by experienced hands. It’s small-batch vinification and careful fruit curation, with abundant lavish dark fruit flavours, such as cocoa bean, plum, soaked dark cherries, black tea, and a little vanilla nougat.
As retailers, we can only dream of these wines. They are so rare, uniquely positioned, and universally desirable that the race to claim even the smallest allocation can feel like an old schoolyard battleground, shouting 'Pick me, pick me'.

Campbell Mattinson, writing for The Wine Front, called it ‘convincing,’ ‘delicious,’ and ‘warm-hearted.’ The ever-so-tough marker Andrew Graham called it ‘lavish’ and ‘surprisingly fragrant,’ and noted how it would ‘win friends with its silken oaky form.’ Ken Gargett noted its ‘serious promise,’ while Halliday said the ‘wines tick all the boxes’ and are ‘excellent.’
