What Type of Wine is Sparkling?
Sparkling wine refers to any wine with significant levels of carbon dioxide, which gives it that signature effervescence. It can be red, white, or rosé, and is made from a variety of grapes depending on the style and region. From dry Brut styles to sweeter sparkling wines, the spectrum is wide and delicious.
Is Sparkling Wine the Same as Champagne?
Not quite. While all Champagne is sparkling wine, not all sparkling wine is Champagne.
To legally carry the name Champagne, a sparkling wine must be produced in the Champagne region of France, using specific grape varieties (primarily Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, and Pinot Meunier) and traditional winemaking methods. Sparkling wines made outside of this region—even those made in France—are simply referred to as sparkling wine.
So while your favourite bottle of Australian sparkling wine or Italian Prosecco might be just as delicious, it isn’t technically Champagne.
How is Sparkling Wine Made?
The sparkle in sparkling wine comes from secondary fermentation, a process that traps carbon dioxide in the bottle to create bubbles.
Historically, this was discovered by accident—cold weather would pause fermentation in barrels, and when the wine warmed up again in spring, fermentation resumed in the bottle. The result? Natural bubbles and, occasionally, exploding wine bottles.
Today, most sparkling wines are made using either the Traditional Method (like Champagne) or the Charmat Method (like Prosecco). The Traditional Method involves secondary fermentation in the bottle, while the Charmat Method ferments in large stainless steel tanks, producing fruitier, fresher styles of bubbly.
What Do We Love About Australian Sparkling Wine?
Australian sparkling wine holds its own on the global stage, with regions like Tasmania and the Yarra Valley producing world-class bottles. From crisp sparkling brut styles to vibrant sparkling rosé, Australian winemakers have embraced both tradition and innovation in crafting bubbles that suit our laid-back lifestyle.
One standout? Sparkling Rosé—perfect for warm afternoons, picnics, or even the great Aussie barbecue.
You’ll also find impressive sparkling wines from regions like New Zealand, Spain (home of Cava), and North America in our range.
How Do You Keep Sparkling Wine Fizzy?
Once opened, a bottle of sparkling wine starts losing its bubbles—but you can slow the process down. Use a proper sparkling wine stopper to seal the bottle and store it in the fridge on its side, not the door. Cooler temperatures reduce bubble loss, and keeping the bottle still will help preserve its fizz longer.
Remember: agitation and warmth are the enemies of sparkling wine effervescence.
