The fruit for this excellent value Margaret River Cabernet is mostly sourced from around the Wilyabrup sub-region. Deep maroon hue. Dry herbs, florals, cherries, chocolate, bay leaves, plums, licorice and cassis to be found on the nose and the flavours carry on to the palate. This has good intensity, focus and a layered texture before spice notes emerge on the palate. Nicely balanced, slightly grippy tannins and with very good length, this is a fine Marg River Cab with a good decade ahead of it.

The palate is sculpted, linear, with chiseled savory tannins and lifted acidity. Still young and a little austere, this should evolve with a few more years in bottle.

It tastes authentically of cabernet and while it’s a touch lighter in varietal terms than you might expect it still feels pretty satisfying. Redcurrant, blackcurrant, gravel and bay leaf flavours hit their peak on the finish, where a violet-and-licorice note appears. Tannin is a modest player but it’s been well handled regardless. This is drinking well now and will continue to do so over the next handful of years.

While there are plenty of appealing aromatics, plus the mulberries, the spice, the eucalyptus and licorice, the palate is jangly and needs more time to gel. The oak and acidity seem overt and the tannins drying, but time should flesh the palate out to accommodate.
