Weingut Dorli Muhr

A pioneering collaboration between Portuguese terroir impresario Dirk Niepoort and Carnuntum-native Dorli Muhr brought us Muhr-Van Der Niepoort between 2002 and 2017. This project single-handedly brought the obscure Austrian winegrowing region of Carnuntum (southeast of Vienna), to the world’s attention. A division of ownership and the name change to Weingut Dorli Muhr took affect with the 2017 vintage, as did organic certification.
Although Niepoort and Muhr have gone their separate ways now, the fruits of their partnership continue to blossom. Since inheriting a 0.17-hectare parcel of vines in the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains, Dorli has championed her region, starting out by purchasing and revitalising tiny, formerly abandoned plots of vines, which she purchased from small, local landholders, as well as planting new vines. She established a quality-oriented group of winegrowers (in 2004) to support the communal development of the appellation, and with it the local reputation of Blaufränkisch. Thanks to this regional spirit and no shortage of elbow grease, Carnuntum was the latest Austrian wine region to earn DAC accreditation. Dorli’s Spitzerberg vineyard has also achieved Erste Lage (First Growth) status in Austria’s Klassifikation 2019.
Today, Dorli fashions some incredibly exciting, pure-fruited Blaufränkisch from various sites in the steep, limestone-rich hillsides of Carnuntum, with vinification now overseen by young new cellar master, Lukas Brandstatter. Over three-quarters of production is dedicated to mono-varietal Blaufränkisch, crafted in a hands-off approach which favours elegance over power. Over the years Muhr has continued to refine her modus operandi of organic viticulture, low yields and precise picking dates, making Weingut Dorli Muhr one of Austria’s go-to red wine estates.
