Tucked away at the end of Wall Road on Mt. Veeder sits the stunning Tesseron Estate, a hidden gem in the world-renowned Napa Valley wine region. Originally owned by the beloved actor Robin Williams, the property was purchased in 2016 by the Tesseron family - Alfred and his nieces Mélanie and Philippine - hailing from France. With a background in oenology and a passion for winemaking, Alfred was drawn to Napa Valley in search of the perfect vineyard site.
After four years of searching, he stumbled upon this picturesque property - a large house, a small vineyard, and sprawling land with breathtaking views. The 650+ acre estate boasts a mere 18 acres of vineyards, primarily planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, and Merlot. The steep slopes and terraced sections of the vineyard provide the ideal growing conditions for these varietals, with cooler temperatures resulting in grapes of exceptional quality.
The property also borders the 3,900 acre Sugarloaf Ridge State Park, adding to the natural beauty and unique terroir of the estate. Vintner Robert Craig originally helped plant the vines in 1990, and today the grapes are grown exclusively for the Pym-Rae wines, named after Williams' children Zachary and Zelda.
The vineyard is tended to year-round by a dedicated team, with a strong focus on biodynamic practices. In 2018, the vineyard received its Demeter certification, further solidifying its commitment to sustainable and eco-friendly farming methods. Each vine is individually cared for, with the primary canopy trained in a circular shape, similar to the practice at Pontet-Canet, providing optimal shade for the grapes.
The wines produced from this estate are a true reflection of the land and the vintage, with a singular focus on producing one exceptional wine each year. The switch to dry farming has resulted in lower yields but higher quality grapes, and the wines have consistently received high praise and accolades.
As Alfred says, "dry farming produces better wines," and it is evident in each bottle of Pym-Rae. With plans to build their own winery on the property, the Tesseron family is committed to preserving the natural beauty and unique characteristics of this estate for generations to come. A visit to Tesseron Estate is not only a journey into the world of fine wine but also an experience of pure beauty and serenity, making it a must-visit for any wine lover.
