What is Syrah Wine?
Syrah is a dark-skinned grape known for producing full-bodied red wines with rich flavours of blackberry, plum, black pepper and smoked meat. While often confused with Shiraz, the terms Syrah and Shiraz are actually used to describe stylistic differences — Syrah typically refers to the more restrained, Old World expression (as seen in France’s Rhône Valley), while Shiraz is the bold, fruit-forward style we’ve come to love in Australia.
Despite the different names, they come from the same grape variety.
Is Syrah Dry or Sweet?
Syrah is a dry red wine by winemaking standards, meaning it contains very little residual sugar. However, that doesn’t mean it lacks fruitiness. Depending on the climate and winemaking approach, Syrah can taste plush and juicy or savoury and earthy. Cooler climate Syrahs often lean into herbaceous, smoky notes, while warmer climate wines tend to showcase ripe, jammy fruits and spice.
Where Does Syrah Come From?
Syrah’s story starts in France, where it has been cultivated for centuries, most notably in the Northern Rhône, in appellations like Hermitage and Côte-Rôtie. The grape made its way to Australia in the 1830s, thanks to viticulturist James Busby. Over time, the Aussie accent transformed the word Syrah into “Shiraz,” and a new winemaking identity was born.
Today, Syrah is grown globally, from Spain and South Africa to Chile, California and New Zealand. Australia remains the second-largest producer of Syrah, with cool-climate regions like Canberra District and Yarra Valley producing wines labelled “Syrah” to highlight a lighter, more refined style.
Are Syrah and Shiraz the Same?
Yes, Syrah and Shiraz are genetically the same grape. The difference lies in the winemaking style.
-
Syrah is typically used when referring to elegant, Old World-style wines — often lower in alcohol, with earthy, floral and savoury characteristics.
-
Shiraz is generally associated with bold, New World expressions — think higher alcohol, richer fruit flavours, and a fuller body.
What Does Syrah Wine Taste Like?
The flavour profile of Syrah depends on where it’s grown, but you can expect notes of:
- Blackberry, blueberry, and dark cherry
- Black pepper, clove and dried herbs
- Leather, smoke and cured meat in aged examples
- Firm tannins and a long, lingering finish
Cool-climate Syrahs (such as those from Victoria’s Grampians or the Northern Rhône) are more savoury and structured, while warmer styles (like those from McLaren Vale) are plush, spicy and rich.
What Food Pairs Well with Syrah?
Syrah is a dream pairing for bold, flavourful dishes. Its structure and tannins work beautifully with red meat, while its spice and depth bring out the best in chargrilled and roasted fare.
Here are some top pairings:
- Lamb shanks or roast beef
- Spicy sausage or barbecue ribs
- Aged cheddar, gouda, or blue cheese
- Chargrilled eggplant or mushroom-based dishes
For a classic combo, try Syrah with a pepper-crusted steak and roasted root vegetables.
Is Petite Sirah the Same as Syrah?
Despite the similar name, Petite Sirah is a different grape variety. It was created in the 1860s by crossing Syrah with a lesser-known grape called Peloursin. The result is a wine with darker colour, bigger tannins, and a more robust style. While Syrah is widely grown in Australia and France, Petite Sirah is mostly found in California.
