Located in the picturesque Côtes de Castillon region of France, SCEA de L'Hêtre is a producer that captures the essence of its stunning surroundings. When renowned wine expert Jacques Thienpont first set foot on the estate during the 2015 harvest, he was immediately taken aback by its prime location and breathtaking views. Perched at the edge of a limestone plateau that stretches from Saint Emilion, this Belgian couple-owned château was appropriately named "Château Goubau" after their family.
Dedicated to their craft, Stéphane and Béatrice Goubau had spent a decade converting the estate to organic farming. With 10 hectares of vineyards surrounded by lush woods and pastures, SCEA de L'Hêtre boasts a diverse and thriving ecosystem, nestled at an impressive height of 100 meters on the Saint Philippe d'Aiguilhe plateau - the highest point in the Bordeaux region.
In 2017, Jacques Thienpont and his sister Anne De Raeymaeker made the bold decision to invest in the estate, solidifying their close family ties. To their delight, they also acquired the neighboring Chateau Montagne, a sprawling 25-hectare estate with a grand chateau and the potential to expand the vineyards by 10 hectares.
With their nephew Maxime Thienpont, who grew up at the family's estate in Margaux, at the helm as manager, the estate was renamed L'Hêtre - meaning "beech tree" in French - keeping with Jacques' love for incorporating arboreal themes into his properties. The vineyards benefit from a favorable southeasterly exposure, a gentle breeze, and a mix of clay, limestone, and chalk soils.
The winemaking process at SCEA de L'Hêtre is a blend of tradition and innovation. The wines are fermented in both concrete and oak vats, then aged in a combination of one-third new oak, one-third one-year-old, and one-third second-year barrels. While the Thienponts had a hand in aging the 2015 vintage, the 2016 vintage marks the first entirely produced by the new owners and proudly bears the name L'Hêtre. The stunning label artwork was created by Belgian artist Anne Van Hereweghen, further adding to the estate's charm.
With a history rooted in family ties and a passion for producing exceptional wines, SCEA de L'Hêtre is a shining example of the beauty and quality that can be found in the Bordeaux region of France.
