Nestled in the heart of Bordeaux, Les Closeries des Moussis stands as a testament to the true potential of natural winemaking. Since its establishment in 2009, this microdomain has been expertly managed by two remarkable women - Pascale Choime, a Cognac-raised oenologist and former cellar master in a renowned Médoc vineyard, and Laurence Alias, an agricultural engineer with a passion for sustainable farming.
Located in the southern Médoc, in the charming village of Arsac, the estate boasts a majority of vines in the Haut-Médoc appellation and a small portion in the prestigious Margaux appellation. Here, biodynamic practices are employed, with all vineyard work done by hand and with the help of their loyal draft horse. This traditional method of working the soil not only preserves the environment, but also adds a touch of authenticity to the winemaking process.
At Les Closeries des Moussis, the focus is on gentle and natural winemaking, a stark contrast to the traditional standards of Bordeaux. Manual harvesting is carried out to ensure the delicate handling of the grapes, and this same approach is continued in the cellar. Vinification is done with minimal intervention, using native yeasts and little to no new wood. The result? Natural wines that exude finesse and elegance, a far cry from the heavy and intense profiles often associated with Haut-Médoc wines.
The estate takes pride in offering accessible and drinkable natural Médoc wines, reminiscent of the forgotten winemaking techniques of the 50s and 60s. While the Médoc is renowned for producing wines meant for aging, Pascale and Laurence have successfully crafted wines that can be enjoyed even in their youth. With a range of Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Cabernet Sauvignon, Les Closeries des Moussis continues to impress with their fine and elegant natural wines.
In a region dominated by traditional winemaking, Les Closeries des Moussis stands out as a pioneer in the natural wine movement in Bordeaux. With a deep respect for the environment and a passion for crafting delicate and accessible wines, this exceptional estate has truly made its mark in the world of wine.
