Yarran's crisp Riverina sparkling is a revelation. So much flavour and yet it's really well balanced too. As they say in the classics, a bargain at half the price.

A key plank of the appeal is that it's not sweet, it's not hard edged or unfriendly. Just well-made sparkling wine from a family owned Riverina producer who is overperforming in the value stakes.

Expert Reviews

90 Points - Ned Goodwin - Halliday's Wine CompanionCrafted from a select batch of chardonnay, baked apple, dried pineapple, a hint of toast and a persuasive mushroom note all linger from fore to aft, indicating some lees handling. The fizz is frothy and gentle. While the acidity plays a refreshment card, it is far from cool climate-high. Another top value proposition across a spritz or straight laced.
Huon HookeThe colour is light straw and there are crisp, clean aromas of candied pear, straw, hay and dried herbs. The taste is crisp and fresh but also soft, while the finish is refreshingly lively. It avoids obvious sweetness: the balance is superb. Great value for money.'
Wine of the WeekI am going to be asked, repeatedly, to recommend an affordable sparkling wine that can do duty at work functions or family get-togethers. You might not have heard of the Yarran label but this bubbly from a family-owned and -operated winery at Yenda offers some affordable luxury here with citrusy, fresh and vibrant notes. It is made from 100% chardonnay grown in the Riverina region of New South Wales but picked early while it still had crunchy acid. Young and quite dry, this a real bargain.'

How's it taste?

Bright citrus fruit aromas lead to a crisp, clean palate with a subtle honeyed character. A lighter style of sparkling made for easy-drinking.

How was it made?

This is the first batch of fruit to be received at the winery each year. Chardonnay is picked early to create a fresh and youthful wine style showing lemon, citrus aromatics and a nice light fruit driven finish. The wine is aged on yeast for up to 9 months prior to bottling; a fine elegant style with great mousse and a touch of dosage (sweetness) remains for balance.

Who made it?

Yarran Wines is a family owned and operated winery. The vineyards, winery and cellar door are all located a short distance from Yenda, NSW. Yenda is part of the Riverina region, an area that has a long tradition for winemaking dating back to 1913 and is well reknowned for producing high quality wines. Fruit has been grown on the family vineyard for 35 years. An interest to create wine from a viticultural background occurred in the late 90’s. The family business has since grown from producing a single Shiraz in 1998 to many different varietal table wines, rich fortified blends and also a classic Riverina Botrytis sweet wine style. The winemaking philosophy behind the wines has evolved over time with each vintage being finely tuned to deliver the highest quality wines to possible. Creative winemaking coupled with a strong commitment to expressing regional style has been a rewarding mix. Each vintage Yarran wines continue to be of a high standard and have gathered exciting accolades and reviews. Chief Winemaker, Sam Brewer, is always trying something a little less mainstream each year, attempting to challenge himself and deliver wines with an extra element and character to the market place.
