Duane Coates weaves his McLaren Vale magic again here with a sparkling red of character and depth of flavour.

Importantly, this isn't too sweet or tannic, just a Goldilocks style richness and full mousse. Blended using fruit from both the Vale and the Adelaide Hills, with all sorts of extra bits thrown in for complexity. Plenty of flavour here!

How's it taste?

Deep crimson red in colour with an enthusiastic mousse. Lifted aromas of subtle raspberry and plum cake backed by subtle spices. Rich and with a velvety textured palate of forest fruit flavours interwoven with dark earth, cardamom and a hint of toast. The long length of persistence is supported by soft acidity, a hint of sweetness and supple tannins.

How was it made?

The base wines are predominately French oak matured Shiraz from McLaren Vale and the Adelaide Hills. Rounding out the blend are small percentages of  Cabernet Sauvignon and Touriga Nacional of up to ten years of age. The inclusion of older base wines were to provide complexity and depth to the palate and aroma. The dosage used is partly ten years old vintage port material.

The minimalist approach used to make the La Petite Cuvee NV precludes the use of the additives and fining agents such as enzymes, egg, fish or milk products (this wine is Vegan friendly).

Who made it?

Duane Coates has a long held passion for Australian and overseas wines. He expanded his winemaking training with vintages in Burgundy with Chateau Demessey, the Rhone Valley with Domaine Francois Villard and the Douro Valley with the Fladgate Partnership (Taylor’s). Exposure to European wines and winemaking has given Duane a broad perspective on techniques and wines styles and heavily influenced the winemaking philosophy of Coates Wines is not predicated on fashion or blind adherence to dogma. The processes they use (and avoid) have grown from experience and understanding with the aim of making wines in a way that provide sensory delights that are truest to region and variety.
