The Rochford Wines Story
This Yarra Valley property was purchased by Helmut Konecsny in 2002; he had already established a reputation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the family-owned Romsey Park vineyard in the Macedon Ranges (sold in 2010). Since '10, Helmut has focused on his Yarra Valley winery and vineyards. In addition to the cellar door, the property has two restaurants, a retail shop, and an expansive natural amphitheatre and observation tower - a showpiece in the region.
5 Stars - Halliday Wine Companion

Rochford wines is considered a showpiece for the Yarra Valley. This is due in part to its exceptional cellar door and restaurant set up, but also, and perhaps more significantly, because it's wine's set the standard for quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool climate region.

The wines are handcrafted using fruit sourced from four exceptional vineyards, and the single site wines produced from these vineyards are some of the finest expressions of the Yarra with beautiful balance and elegance. Their viticultural practices are based around maintaining balance in the vineyards, sustainability and responsiveness to changing environmental conditions. The winemaking philosophy of Rochford is to produce the best fruit possible in the vineyard, handle the fruit gently to preserve fruit character, minimise extraction and allow the wines to express the individuality of the vineyard and each growing season.
Why's this wine for you?

It’s rise has been meteoric with savvy wine drinkers eschewing that ‘old school’ style of overt oak and seeking out more elegant and finesse expressions of the grape.

The Yarra’s cool-climate could have been custom made for Chardonnay (thank you, oh great grape gods!) and Rochford, with it’s considered and paired back approach to vine growing and winemaking, has all the hallmarks of a regional leader.

It’s always been a quiet achiever, developing greatness behind the scenes and delivering some of the most fastidiously transformational Pinot experiences you’ll find anywhere outside of Burgundy. The loyal followers of Rochford’s long and storied career will know exactly what we are talking about.

Now, here’s the deal. The top wines of the estate are extraordinary and well worth the dollars you’ll spend on them. But we think the real value lies in the entry level wines, where you can snap up some simply astonishing bottles for practically peanuts.

Case in point: the recently released: Rochford Cru de la Côte Chardonnay 2021.

This is a wine of precision and purity that could only come from the best sites. The nose is quite expressive with nougat, baked apple pie and white peach. The palate is juicy and generous with a white peach, cashew and fresh, clean finish that will leave your mouth tingling. It definitely has all the makings of a classic.
