The Collective Review

This Pepper Tree Limited Release is all about the super-premium Orange & Wrattonbully Chardonnay fruit, that this legendary winery brings to the sorting table. The long and slow ripening helps intensify the stonefruit, citrus peel and minerality of the wine, making sure there’s plenty of pizzazz and texture to help soak up the luscious French oak.

But we all know you’re not here for the tasting notes… you want the inside running on where your money's going, so here’s a quick summary for the busy brigade:

Original price at the cellar door: $40 RRP, now slashed by The Wine Collective. Produced by a Halliday five-red star winery (top-tier rating), featuring grapes from two esteemed cool-climate vineyards in Wrattonbully and Orange.

Based in the legendary Hunter Valley, the winery collaborates with one of Australia's most celebrated winemakers.

Awarded 92 points by Angus Hughson at Wine Pilot, who describes it as ‘a really attractive wine which will drink beautifully over the next 4 to 6 years.’

Characterised by its textural richness and notes of green apple, stonefruit, lemon pie, and almond meal.

The deal is clear-cut. Thanks to its exclusive 'Limited Release' label, you can bring this exceptional $40 Chardonnay into your collection for far less. It's an unbeatable offer for those who appreciate the elegance, intricacy, and lively character of top-quality cool-climate Chardonnays.

Angus Hughson - Winepilot.com

This is a pleasing Chardy which takes advantage of some of the cooler regions growing this much loved variety. In this case, Wrattonbully and Orange. This limited release is a lovely pale lemon hue. The nose gives the impression of a wine of delicacy but one of underlying power. The aromas whirl through limes, spices, florals, a gentle hint of oak and baked lemon pie. There is good focus here and moderate length. Nice balance, this is a really attractive wine which will drink beautifully over the next 4 to 6 years. 92.

Winemakers Note

VINTAGE
WRATTONBULLY: A remarkable Wrattonbully
vintage with great ripening conditions produced
grapes with intense colour, flavour and tannin.
The cool nights retained natural acidity and the
warm days provided perfect ripening. This
vintage is one for the history books.

ORANGE: Orange experienced damp cool
conditions in Spring and early Summer leading to
favourable slow ripening conditions for whites
with intense florals and remarkable acidity.
The overall assessment of the Orange 2021
vintage was that it was a cool late ripening vintage
which gave wines of great balance and flavour
with good ageing potential.

WINEMAKING
Individual blocks were harvested separately and
were pressed on arrival to the winery. The
resulting juice was cold settled and racked off
solids before being inoculated for ferment. Once
inoculated the juice was put to French oak
puncheons to finish ferment. Left on yeast lees for
8 months, the resulting wines were then blended
and prepared for bottling.
Blended from our estate vineyards in Wrattonbully and Orange, this wine displays lifted aromas of
peach and white flowers. A generous, complex palate packed with stone fruits and brown spice notes
balanced with a crunchy, refined acid line providing a long refined finish.

VINEYARD
WRATTONBULLY: located in the Limestone
Coast wine zone. The prominent viticultural
feature of the area is the series of ancient beach
ridges and dunes which run roughly north-south
through the area. These ridges are made up of
soft crumbly limestone which weathers to
produce the red and brown Terra Rossa clay
loam soils so highly prized for grape growing.
The ridges and dunes have elevations of up to
30m compared with the neighbouring regions to
the south with Terra Rossa 'high' of less than 5m.
The extra elevation on the Wrattonbully dunes
produce the advantage of cold air drainage which
reduces the risk of frost during the growing
season.

ORANGE: The Orange region is favoured for its
high altitude cool climate . Situated
approximately 270 km west of Sydney the
topography and soils of the region are dominated
by the extinct volcano Mt Canobolas. Soils in the
central part of the region are derived from the
basaltic lavas of the old volcano, and primarily
consist of deep red to brown free draining clay
loams.
