2021 Gemtree Cinnabar GSM

This is a slick, aspirational and highly professional operation. I may have been critical of certain elements in the past, but the estate is on the way up. 60%/34%/6% grenache/shiraz/mataro. As is the wont here, the ferment is kicked off spontaneously before a pied de cuve to ensure stability and palpable dryness. Fermented in tank, concrete eggs and large oak. Aged in wood for 9 months. A fine nose reminiscent of Asian plum, pumice, kirsch, thyme and rosemary of the Southern Rhône. Nothing is heavy, desiccated, too sweet or out of sorts. A swathe of chalky, pungent tannins corral, direct, impart tension and make me salivate for the next glass. Exceptional GSM. Read more

Come to the Cinnabar. A blend of 70% Grenache, 20% Shiraz and 10% Mataro. Dark raspberry, plum, cherry chocolate, a little spice, with a floral and dried herb perfume. Medium-bodied, a juicy mix of berries with an earthy edge, fresh with balanced acidity and a light chew from tannin, and good length. The thing about it I like most, is that while it has flavour, it tastes dry and has no trace of confected fruit or sweetness. Lovely. Great value. Classic GSM.

Tasting Notes

On the nose, it displays aromas of blackberry and ripe plum, with hints of spice and cedar. The vibrant colour is a deep ruby red, and it has a smooth and velvety texture on the palate. Lush fruit flavours of raspberry and blackberry are complemented by light notes of vanilla and pepper, and a subtle hint of oak. Balanced and refined.

Winemakers Note

Certified organic and biodynamic, low--preservative and vegan friendly. According to winemaker Mike Brown, GSM is a blend they love to make and drink in the McLaren Vale, and this seamless blend is a vibrant and live wine bursting with the classic, old-vine Grenache flavours of cherry and plum.
