2021 Deep Woods Redlands Sauvignon Blanc

The Collective Review

The Redlands philosophy is simple: fruit richness, flavour and soft tannins. Aromas of ripe passionfruit, citrus, fresh cut grass and zest. The palate displays generous fruit flavours with racy acidity.

This Margaret River estate, first established in 1987, has changed hands a number of times but now forms part of the Fogarty Wine Group (Lakes Folly, Millbrook and more). For me, this is the jewel in their crown, offering some sensational wines. Sixteen hectares offer a wide range of varieties, made by Julian Langworthy, one of the very top winemakers in this country and currently at the top of his game. They offer a range of levels, with the Redlands very much the value sweet spot in the collection. Bright fresh yellows here. If you are expecting the grassy notes usually associated with West Aussie Savvy, forget it. This is all tropical flavours, with mangoes and passionfruit especially. Some ripe gooseberry characters. This is bright and exuberant, seamless on the palate and with decent length. The palate offers similar flavours to the nose, as you'd expect, with a slight minerally backing. Drink now but no issue if you still have a bottle ahead of you in a year or two. Read more
