Winemakers Note

Schönburger is a German grape variety developed in the late 70s from the crossing of Pinot Noir and Pirovano 1 (itself a crossing of Chasselas Rosé and Muscat Hamburg). It was brought into Tasmania for trial planting in 1982. Barringwood was the second commercial planting of the variety in the southern hemisphere and remains one of few producers offering a singe variety wine. Barringwood’s 2020 Schönburger was handpicked from our original ultra-cool North West vineyard where the up to 30 years old vines enjoy views across to Bass Strait from their 280m elevation. With a long mild growing season this site is perfectly suited to the exotic Schönburger grape allowing it’s aromatics to fully develop while retaining some natural crisp acidity.
