2019 Vasse Felix Chardonnay

Pale straw-yellow hue. Lemon curd, almond meal and bakery items. Quite tight and focused. Good acidity drives a saline minerality whilst citrus fruit and roast nuts sit alongside. Good length and a lovely crisp savoury note to this finish. A delicious chardonnay Read more

86/14% Gingin clone/Dijon clones 95, 96 and 77 from Boodjidup, Wilyabrup and Karridale. Full-solids style, 100% wild ferment, 9 months on lees in French oak barrique (39% new). Each year this wine presents an amalgam of creamy, chewy phenolics, ripe yet nervy fruit and exotic spice. The balance of these things depends on the year. In 2019, it's creamy and saline with white peach and fennel flower. Gorgeous stuff.

This classic wine is rich and concentrated yet bright and elegant. Citrus, melon rind, oyster shell, toasted brioche and nutty notes flow into a beautifully constructed palate. There's crackling acidity straight out of the gate and subtle, toasty oak to ground it. Slippery and slinky, with salinity and depth of flavor, this is a finessed, balanced wine. Drink now–2028.

Vasse Felix continues to deliver more fruit weight in its Chardonnay. Penetrative aromas of grapefruit, yellow peach and lemon reveal notes of coriander, charcuterie meats and a whiff of marl. Its creamy core of generous, translucently clear citrus and stonefruit flavours moves with shape and balance towards a focused and vivacious finish of lingering mineral and briny nuances.

It’s still finding its feet but it will get there. This is a restrained or elegant version of the breed but it still has Margaret River written all over it. Stonefruit and juicy pear flavours rush through the palate in refreshing style and keep the flavour going convincingly through the finish. It’s largely unfettered and uncomplicated but the fruit has an impressive pure quality to it. Start drinking it from the start of next summer.

A mix of brittle and juicy texture, concentration yet freshness, nice saline character, a touch of resiny-cedary oak mixed in. Just ripe stone fruits, green apple crunch, light nougat notes, good length. Feels kinda fancy, though remains gluggable and relatively simple. Decent drinking.

Tasting Notes

Bright pale straw with a gold tinge. A fragrant fruit perfume of white peach, yuzu, and pear flan, gives way to creamy yeast lees and fragrant oak complexities which deliver almond meal, ginger nut biscuits, and nougat nuances. Background notes of flint and ocean breeze reveal themselves with time. An incredible body characteristic of our Premier plots of fruit, complemented by a fresh line of acidity. This freshness is followed by an immediate broadening of the palate, harmonious and chalky, the wine is mouth coating but not heavy. Complex and complete, the fragrance lingers on the finish.
