The Collective Review

Maintaining the mystery of this delicious red, we’re not going to tell you who made it, but we can reveal that it’s from Margaret River. Only premium parcels of fruit go into this bottle, creating a wine of elegance and distinction - perfectly fitting for this outstanding Australian wine region. Crafted by two winemakers with a combined 65 years in the wine industry, this is a picture-perfect example of what decades of experience can deliver, with polish and winemaking precision delivering a wine that is sure to ‘woo’.

“Yeah, righto mate… get to the good stuff” we hear you cry! You're talking about the taste. And trust us, you won’t be disappointed.

This Cabernet is full of intense flavours of succulent blackcurrant and toasty spice. On the nose, enjoy spiced dark chocolate and juicy berry fruits. The tannins are fine, and the finish goes on forever - kind of like that friend telling you all about how tall Big Ben is.

Matured for 18 months in French oak (30% new oak). Aniseed, cassis, mulberry and licorice on the nose. On the palate, this is fine, layered and very juicy, with sprinklings of exotic spice over the finish. Margaret River was cool and wet in 2019, and for those who prepared for the conditions, the vintage was of high aromas, delicacy and poise. Very smart. Read more

Margaret River Cabernet is one of the great wine styles offered in this country and this is a fine example. The team’s usual procedure is for the fruit to be destemmed and then crushed into static fermenters for cold soaking for six to eight days. Fermentation proceeds with twice daily pumpovers, before pressing to barrel for 18 months. Dark purple. The nose offers appealing notes of black cherries, dried herbs and black olives. This is fragrant and finely constructed. Good focus here, the wine has line and length. Black fruits dominate the palate at this early stage which also displays very fine tannins and excellent length. This has six to eight years of improvement ahead of it and should plateau for many years after that. A fine Margaret River Cabernet.

Tasting Notes

Aromas of blackberries, cassis and dried herbs. On the palate, it is powerful and concentrated, with underlying notes of dark berry fruits, aniseed, cedar and tobacco. The tannins are well integrated and balanced by juicy acidity, providing a long and velvety finish. A truly enjoyable wine that is well worth trying.

Winemakers Note

Laurels are originally the evergreen wreaths given to winners in all walks of life. They are bestowed on those who have excelled in their field of endeavor and have been a mark of honour and achievement for thousands of years. To have received laurels, it is understood you have reached the very peak of success. And so it is with ‘The Laurels’.

These are wines of distinction and gravitas – they are full flavoured wines with tremendous longevity. However, this range of wines also demonstrate that we never rest on our laurels – that every vintage our viticulturists andr winemakers strive to surpass the wines of previous vintages. They learn every year and strive to deliver back to us wines of distinction and elegance that exceed the quality of previous triumphs.
