The Torzi Matthews Story
Torzi Matthews is a food and winemaking partnership between Domenic Torzi and Tracy Matthews which began in 1996 when they stumbled across a small, frost-pocketed hollow in the beautiful Mt McKenzie, Eden Valley and fell in love with the area for its remoteness and its diverse thin soils. Domenic and Tracey run the winery with one guiding principal: that their land produce low yields of fruit which in turn translate into flavoursome European style wines – the style of wines needed to match their Mediterranean heritage and food.

Powerful stuff it was, rich and opulent, but still with focus and elegance. But then that all changed. Oak seemed to vanish from the wines; a newer, fresher style seemed preferable. But the old school lovers bid their time, waiting for the day that the full flavoured Chardonnay of their dreams would return….

That day has come.

And it’s come in the form of Terraced Hills Chardonnay 2019.

A wine project begun by Dominic Torzi and Tracy Matthews in 1996 (Torzi Matthews) aimed at crafting artisanal wines in Eden Valley has expanded to encompass wines from Adelaide hills. Under the Terraced Hills label, they produce Chardonnay grown from Burgundy clones which sees 11 months ageing in 30% new French Oak.

The result is a stunning piece of soft, full bodied wine, yet not lacking precision, that will please all fans of the grape, no matter where their preference on the Chardonnay spectrum lies.

How's it taste?
Aromatic stone fruits, pineapple and white blossom flowers, supportedby subtle underlying tannin from the French oak. Fine creamy texturewith fresh cut pineapple, and white peach with excellent roundnessfrom extended lees contact while finishing beautifully balanced withpure acid and a savoury palate of deliciousness.

30% new oak, 25% malolactic fermentation. Plenty of stonefruit and pineapple flavour and biscuit spices in a creamy base, some fine powdery texture, fresh pineapple acidity, and a pleasantly smooth and gently savoury finish. A good thing to drink for sure, and not least because it’s so easily identifiable as being Chardonnay
