Expert Reviews

92 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontLinear is one of those words wine types like to use, I guess, and this is certainly that. There’s struck match, green melon rind, lime and plenty of acid crunch. It pushes along very well, flinty and tight, with a quinine-like aftertaste. It’s energetic and very lively. Like a tiger.

How's it taste?

How was it made?

Fruit is crushed and presssed to French and Austrian oak barriques and puncheons (15% new) and a ceramic egg with juice solids for primary fermentation. 43% malolactic conversion, then sulphured on less. 10 months on less in oak.
Viticultural Notes: Chardonnay clones: I10V3, I10V5, 76 and 96
Handpicked on the 26th February and 6th March 2019
Optimal conditions for flowering and fruitset in the vineyards gave well balanced yield with plenty of promise leading into the 2019 harvest. A dry January and February followed, culminating in a relatively compressed vintage, though attention to detail in the vineyards gave winemakers wonderfully balanced fruit with concentration of flavour and exceptional natural acidity. This wine is a blend of Chardonnay grapes from our Yarra Valley Swallowfield and Isabella‘s vineyards.

Who made it?

This Yarra Valley property was purchased by Helmut Konecsny in 2002; he had already established a reputation for Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the family-owned Romsey Park vineyard in the Macedon Ranges (sold in 2010). Since '10, Helmut has focused on his Yarra Valley winery and vineyards. In addition to the cellar door, the property has two restaurants, a retail shop, and an expansive natural amphitheatre and observation tower - a showpiece in the region.
5 Stars - Halliday Wine Companion

Rochford wines is considered a showpiece for the Yarra Valley. This is due in part to its exceptional cellar door and restaurant set up, but also, and perhaps more significantly, because it's wine's set the standard for quality Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from the cool climate region.

The wines are handcrafted using fruit sourced from four exceptional vineyards, and the single site wines produced from these vineyards are some of the finest expressions of the Yarra with beautiful balance and elegance. Their viticultural practices are based around maintaining balance in the vineyards, sustainability and responsiveness to changing environmental conditions. The winemaking philosophy of Rochford is to produce the best fruit possible in the vineyard, handle the fruit gently to preserve fruit character, minimise extraction and allow the wines to express the individuality of the vineyard and each growing season.
