The King Valley is increasingly known for good Pinot Gris, delivering textural wines with real freshness and this Hare & Tortoise sticks to the script perfectly.
Sourced from the empire of Nicholas Crampton, the ex-Penfolds marketer who knows how to deliver easily appealing wines. This has ripe fruit, crisp acidity and lots of flavour - a perfect mix of what you want in a modern Gris.

How's it taste?

Pale in colour with radiant green and yellow hues. Freshly cut pear, lemons, ginger and faint pine needle aromas lead to a mouth-filling burst of fruit flavour. Pear, green apple, light spices and white flowers on the palate are pulled tight by refreshing acidity.

How was it made?

Vineyard: Sourced from the better blocks of an established vineyard in the heart of King Valley. Here the site has perfect drainage and high fertility allowing for good vigour as with much of King Valley. Keen canopy management helps to ensure sunlight is optimised for berry ripeness whilst the coolness of night maintains the all-important bracing acidity.

Winemaking: Hand-picked in the morning before the warmth of the day, hand-sorted prior to whole bunch pressing and fermentation in stainless steel. Some time on lees in tank has softened the wines edges and helped create a wonderfully bright, aromatic wine with full flavours yet subtlety and texture.

2019 Vintage: 2019 in King Valley is shaping to be a very good one. Optimal conditions prevailed throughout the growing season all the way through to picking for each variety. Pinot Gris/Grigio, Prosecco and the red varieties are all showing great varietal definition and the classic freshness the region is renowned for.

Who made it?

Hare & Tortoise wines are locally sourced and hand-crafted from high quality fruit sourced from the best of sites in Victoria. Each wine in the Hare & Tortoise range represents the steady pursuit of fine, individual, regional wines of great drinkability and interest through patience, knowledge and a hands-off approach to winemaking.
