Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW - Wine Advocate

The 2019 le Dragon de Quintus is a blend of 86% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Franc, harvested from the 19th of September to the 9th of October. The estimated alcohol degree on the label is 15%. Deep garnet-purple colored, it rocks up with open-knit notes of stewed plums, fruitcake and blackberry preserves with touches of garrigue, cloves and pencil shavings. The full-bodied palate is simply bursting with spicy black fruit preserves, framed by ripe, rounded tannins and bold freshness, finishing with a lingering peppery kick. This is a very different style from the grand vin—but seriously good in its own right!

Winemakers Note

Le Dragon is the second wine of Château Quintus. The inspiration for the name came from the dragon statue dominating the magical terroir of Saint-Emilion from the estate’s privileged location, perched on a promontory. Le Dragon has a beautiful dark red color. The first nose is intense, fruity and fresh. When the wine is swirled in the glass, the nose becomes more complex and a discreet woody note mingles with very ripe black fruit. The first impression is fine and elegant, leading to a fairly dense tannic structure of medium length. The fruit accompanies the structure and substance. This Le Dragon leaves an impression of exquisite balance. It resembles the 2012 for its silky charm linked to the dominant Merlot grape variety of this blend. The property The story of Quintus is as ancient as that of Saint-Emilion itself, as one of the region’s oldest vineyards, planted as early as the 4th or 5th century B.C. Perched on a limestone promontory (mound) culminating at an altitude of 62 meters, Château Quintus is located on the southwestern extremity of the Saint-Emilion plateau and shares its beautiful exposure and fabulous microclimate with the most renowned properties of this appellation. With 28 hectares of vines, the estate boasts exceptional biodiversity thanks to its two-hectare park with majestic holm oaks, low walls and slopes. The teams’ daily efforts to developing this incredible biodiversity have already been rewarded by a double certification: High Environmental Value and ISO14001.
