Expert Reviews

95 Points - Toni Paterson MW - The Real ReviewPowerful wild lime aromatics with spice accents. The palate is weighty, flavoursome and assertive with impressive acid drive. There is a juiciness to the palate despite it being bone-dry. Amazing flavours. A highly satisfying Eden Valley riesling.
95 Points - James Halliday - Halliday's Wine CompanionEVR 903 MZ. From the Mason and Zander family vineyards, each with a number of blocks, each parcel vinified separately, cool-fermented and pressed with free-run and pressings held separately until blending and bottling. The lime and lemon fruit is purposeful, the palate lengthened by taut acidity.
95 Points - Huon HookeThis has a lifted flowery nose with fresh as well as dried floral nuances, a hint of lavender talcum powder. There really is a lovely array of aromatics here. The palate is likewise wonderfully floral, fragrant, open and accessible. An utterly delicious wine.
91 Points - James SucklingA fruity and easy white with sliced-peach and stone aromas and flavors. Medium body. Crisp finish. Drink now.
90 Points - Gary Walsh - The Wine FrontSoft, juicy, easy to drink as a young wine, though perhaps a little broad in its delivery of ripe lemon/lime flavour. Has an attractive chalky finish, some lemon rind and vanilla studded pie apple, but not quite enough get-up-and-go to rate higher. Good now.

How's it taste?

Fragrant and floral nose of lemon blossom, pear, orchard fruits, hints of lime and herbs. A powerful and well balanced palate with zesty lemon-lime citrus, regional minerality and a touch of sherbet. A long crisp finish.

How was it made?

The 2018 growing season in Eden Valley was successful as per previous years, with Riesling being a standout variety due to surprisingly high natural acids. Winter rainfall was higher than average, with spring and December rainfalls only slightly below average. Higher temperatures in October and November meant that the canopy growth was vigorous, flowering occurred without problems and bunches set well. Very warm temperatures in February slowed ripening with the grapes being picked in mid March.

Fruit for the 2018 vintage was sourced from the Mason and Zander family blocks in Eden Valley. After harvest the grapes were crushed and fermented in stainless steel tanks for approximately 40 days. Majority of the blend is free run juice but some pressings are used for flavour during the blending stage. The ferment was kept cool to retain delicate aromatics and low extraction rates on the juices avoided excessive phenolic retention. Malolactic fermentation was avoided to maintain a vibrant and crisp finish. A Riesling with beautiful purity and prettiness in youth, promises to be a wonderful wine to age – 10+ years.
