2018 Thorn Clarke Mount Crawford Riesling

Expert Reviews

95 Points - Royal Melbourne Wine Show
90 Points - James SucklingFloral and easy white with sliced, spiced pears and hints of lemons and grapefruit. Medium to light body. Crisp finish.
90 Points - Christina Pickard - Wine EnthusiastA strong offering from the typically more fruit-driven Eden Valley. Lemon-lime sorbet, lavender and a little honey are wrapped in a texture that is chalky yet slippery, lifted to refreshing heights by bright, mouthwatering acidity. An affordable, food-friendly wine to keep stocked in the fridge all summer long.
Raymond ChanBright, pale straw-yellow colour with slight green hues, pale edged. The nose is very fresh and intense with penetrating and deep aromas of pure lime and lemonade fruit along with subtle white florals and a suggestion of saline, unfolding mouth-watering herb and mineral nuances. Dry to taste and medium-bodied, the palate has intense and penetrating flavours of limes and lemons and white florals. The fruit has richness and lusciousness, balanced by fine acid cut, and the wine flows with excellent energy along a zesty, refreshing line with very fine textures, leading to a long, lingering finish. This is a beautifully penetrating and intense dry Riesling with luscious lime and lemon flavours with white florals and minerals on a mouth-watering palate. 18.5/20 Points.

How's it taste?

Vibrant pale straw with green highlights. The nose shows perfumed floral notes along with fresh cut white peach and kaffir lime leaf. The palate follows through with juicy citrus flavours and light spice, along with a long balanced acidity and a fine minerality on the finish.

How was it made?

The 2018 growing season had all the hallmarks of a classic vintage. Consistent warm temperatures produced perfect conditions for our Eden Valley whites to ripen. This along with good winter rains and a dry harvest period resulted in vibrant varietal flavours, excellent natural acidity and a long balanced finish.

Harvest was carried out at night. The fruit was pressed (using an airbag press) within an hour of harvest. Care was taken not to lose the delicate Riesling aromas and flavour precursors in the juice. After settling, the juice was warmed and inoculated with a neutral yeast selected for its ability to respect the purity of Riesling.

Who made it?

The Thorn-Clarke family are known as sixth generation wine region employees, establishing a winery to solidify their presence in the region. Wines are styled for premium consumption, with vineyards being paramount in the winemaking process. Grape growing is the primary activity, wine producing a by product of the years of experience with the vines. Thorn Clarke is a Barossa Valley based winery that sources fruit from premier vineyards in the Eden Valley and Barossa Valley. The individual vineyard sites are Mount Crawford and Milton Park (Eden) and Kabininge and St Kitts (Barossa). Whites are left to Eden Valley, reds to Barossa Valley. Modern winemaking techniques are applied in their updated and modern winery. Technology assists in the production of cleanly made, volume brands that convey their regionality but ultimately are style for easy, early consumption.
