An odd name maybe but this Sfera wine is one of those products were you stop and think 'what is this and where has it come from'.

Turns out that the Wirrega vineyard is a project headed by Geoff Hardy and a group of partners to produce premium grapes on the cool Limestone Coast.

You don't see the label around very much, but when the odd wine lobs it can be very handy - just like this Gris,

Gentle ripe fruit, fine texture and yet with tight citrus acidity, this is well made Gris with width and flavour.

How's it taste?

The cool nights of the Limestone coast have ensured this Pinot Gris is bright and refreshing with flavours of peaches, pears and green apples. Extended time on lees has given extra weight and texture on the mid-palate, with a slight blush from skin contact.

How was it made?

The lead into the 2018 vintage was wet wet wet, which delayed flowering and pushed the entire ripening period into much later territory than we are used to. These cooler conditions much suited high acid white varieties like Pinot Gris.

The fruit from the 2018 ‘Sfera’ Pinot Gris was harvested from our Block 3 East. Machine harvested at night to retain freshness, before haulage to the winery.

Four hours on skins and gently basket pressing has created a subtle blush hue to the wine. White stone fruit and fresh pears give texture to this wine, balanced by a racy lemon tart finish. Custard and green apples dance mid palate giving nice depth

Who made it?

Back in 1993 Geoff Hardy, having noticed the outstanding quality of the grapes produced in the area, brought together a group of wine loving friends to purchase the 430 acre property near Mundulla in South Australia. The circle of friends included Scott Collett, Rocco Melino, Roger Oakeshott, Grant Tilbrook, John Younger and Guido Zuccoli. Over the next three years, and with the primary aim of growing premium quality fruit, the vineyard was planted out mainly with International varieties suited to the site. Since then an eclectic mix of emerging varieties have been added. For the past 22 years Wirrega Vineyards has provided top quality fruit for some of Australia’s most iconic wine brands. With the launch of the Wirrega Vineyards wine label the time has now come for Wirrega to show what it can do!
