From deep in south western WA comes a wonderfully spicy, red berry laden Shiraz of real character.
It's medium bodied, the mood more about being all delicious and authentic rather than pushing to be too ripe, too heavy. Luke & Coby at Rosenthal know that Frankland River isn't about power, it's about delivering well-balanced wines.

Expert Reviews

95 Points - Sam Kim - Wine OrbitThis is splendidly ripe and beautifully lifted on the nose showing blackberry, sweet plum, vanilla pod and toasted spice characters. The palate displays excellent concentration and depth, wonderfully complemented by fleshy mouthfeel and well-pitched tannins, offering fabulous drinking. At its best: now to 2030. How's it taste?

Lifted bouquet of bramble fruits, plum and spice with savoury oak. The palate has a full, rounded mouthfeel of dark fruits, cherry and blueberry. The mid-palate is rich with well integrated dusty tannins, supported by complex elegant oak. This wine displays great structure with a long full finish.

How was it made?

The 2018 vintage had a wet winter followed by mild and warm conditions for summer which continued well into autumn. Due to the perfect slow ripening pattern both red and white grape varieties showed intense colour, aroma and concentrated flavours while achieving perfect tannin ripeness.

The fruit was machine picked then de-stemmed / crushed / chilled into small open fermenters and inoculated after 6 days cold soak. The fermenters were pumped over with aeration twice a day, temperature was held around 25°C, then allowed to warm up for the finish of fermentation. The wine was then transferred in barrel for its malolactic fermentation, allowing a soft integration of the grape and oak tannins. The wine was bottled after 13 months maturation.

Who made it?

Rosenthal Wines is a boutique winery located in Denmark on the south coast of Western Australia in the Great Southern wine region. Originally established in 2001 by Dr John Rosenthal with a small vineyard holding in Manjimup that focused on Shiraz and Cabernet. Since 2012, the winery has been owned and operated by the Eckersley and Ladwig families. With over 35 years of winemaking experience between them, best mates and winemakers, Luke Eckersley and Coby Ladwig, have considerable experience in the West Australian wine industry. The boys are inseparable and hold the same belief that great wines must come from great grapes. They adopt a mix of traditional and new world winemaking practices to ensure they respect each grape and its own unique characteristics.
