2018 Pure Clare Cabernet Sauvignon

The Collective Review

Line up for the biggest, darkest, most luscious and full-flavoured red around! That's the Pure Clare ethos, with so much flavour that you can see it. Or at least taste it.

Our Collective preferred wines need to tick a lot of boxes. Quality, of course. Value, you bet and the last and most important of them all. They MUST be delicious! This is the broad-shouldered, robust Clare Valley Cabernet that’s got it all. Hence why we stamp it with our Collective Preferred badge.

This latest incarnation with the Pure Clare badge is made by Clare Valley stalwart Jeanneret Wines. Headed up by self-taught Winemaker, Ben Jeanneret, his ethos is to produce generous wines full of flavour to be enjoyed amongst friends. Ben has perfected the art and is regarded as one of the leading winemakers of Clare Valley and was named one of the “Ten Dark Horses” by James Halliday. Expect a thunderous wine, with fruit sourced from the famous Armargh Valley in the Clare Valley, from vines over 30+ years.

It's splendidly fruited and fragrant on the nose, showing blackcurrant, dark cherry, vanillin oak and subtle tobacco aromas on the nose. The palate delivers terrific weight and succulent fruit intensity, beautifully supported by supple texture and plenty of fine-grained tannins, making it highly enjoyable. At its best: now to 2033. $30.00. Feb 2024.

This collection from the Clare represents ridiculous value. A cracking Cabernet Sauvignon from forty-year-old vines from the Armagh Valley in the Clare Valley for fifteen bucks? Sounds crazy, but here it is. Made by Ben Jeanneret and the team at the family winery, which has been in business since 1992. An attractive crimson colour with an aroma of black fruits, black jellybeans, cloves, aniseed and dry herbs. Has line and length and focus. The wine has admirable structure, backed by nicely balanced acidity and finishing with fine tannins. Very enjoyable now but should easily age well for four to eight years. A bolder, firmer style of red.

Made by the Jeanneret Wines team this is the essence of Clare Valley flavour. Dark berries. Tannins. Choc mint aplenty. All of it, all here and drinking wonderfully.
