The Ponting Wines Story
Ponting Wines is a collaboration between one of Australia’s most celebrated modern-day cricketers, Ricky Ponting, and Ben Riggs, an award-winning Australian winemaker known for uncompromising, high quality wines. Masters of their craft, their partnership has been forged to celebrate their dedication and achievements. Who is Ricky Ponting? In addition to being an Australian icon, Ricky Ponting is arguably one of the most successful cricketers of all time. As captain, Ricky won two consecutive World Cup titles and remains the second best Australian batsman after Sir Donald Bradman. Today, with his wife Rianna, he has helped raise in excess of $10 million to help young Australians fight cancer, and was awarded an Order of Australia in 2012.    Who is Ben Riggs? Ben Riggs, otherwise known as Mr Riggs, has been in the wine industry for more than 35 years and founded his eponymous Mr Riggs Wine in 2001. During over 45 vintages, Ben has worked in the vineyards of Napa Valley, Bordeaux, Greece and Italy, earning him over 100 trophies, recognition as McLaren Vale’s “Bushing King” twice as well as two nominations for Gourmet Traveller’s Winemaker of the Year.  Where are Ponting Wines from? Each wine reflects Ricky’s life and has been carefully crafted by Ben to ensure flavour, structure and complexity are of the highest quality. Through extensive contacts with growers, Ben’s winery in South Australia has access to premium fruit from the Adelaide Hills, Clare Valley, Barossa Valley, Coonawarra and McLaren Vale. The result is unpretentious wines that reflect the unique terroir of each region.  The Ponting Milestone 127 Shiraz marks Ricky’s milestone innings of 127 - his first Ashes Test and maiden Test century. Ben captures this milestone through hand-selected parcels of Shiraz from the Barossa Valley.  The Ponting Close of Play Cabernet Sauvignon honours the tradition of raising a glass with team mates at the close of play - “the special moments”, Ricky calls them.  The Wine Collective is proud to share these two great Australians and their partnership which celebrates combined dedication and achievements through the highest quality wine.

Platinum Award Winner. Intense black fruit perfumes on the nose, and a sweet, luscious palate, with vanilla, cedar and leather and beautifully integrated pencilly oak. A layered, poised and confident wine with purity and restraint. One that will age gracefully.

Ralph Kyte-Powell - The Real Review
This blend of McLaren Vale and Coonawarra shiraz and cabernet is a wine of some finesse, and finesse isn't always associated with Aussie wines in toe-breakingly heavy bottles like this one. It has appealing aromas of cassis, plum cake, gentle spice, cocoa, and skilfully-handled oak. It's smooth and lush in the mouth, full-bodied and lingering in flavour, with soft, ripe tannins folded through in excellent balance. A classy example of the big South Australian red.

Campbell Mattinson - The Wine Front
It’s a hefty wine in flavour terms but it’s coated in vanilla cream, so it feels soft. There’s a lot of fruit and a lot of oak here, both, but it feels well-integrated and harmonious. Mint, dark chocolate, blackcurrant and scorched plum flavours work deliciously, if brutally, well. There’s a firmness to the tannin, less integrated than the fruit-oak but it still manages to sit well. It’s a bruising encounter right now though of course there’s a time and place for that. But it should hold and mature over the long-ish term
